THE GREAT BRITISH GARDEN REVIVAL

The second episode was broadcast last night. A fascinating hour long programme on Topiary then Roof Gardens. The series is hailed as intending to make gardeners and non-gardeners think about lost elements of our British garden history. It certainly has got many gardeners I know it an excited frenzy, including myself, as I see this as a wonderful opportunity to promote gardens, garden makers and the subsequent television and publishing dirth of late ! However, for this series to be effective it needs to be accurate....Topiary is drawn from the latin 'TOPIARUS' meaning gardener ,or one who controls nature ! Secondly, to have a whole FORTY MINUTE NATIONAL TELEVISION SEGMENT and not once mention box blight seems a particularly glaring mistake ! At the very least a discussion of hygiene, alternative strains of box or alternative plants !! Rant over...on to episode three...
