Ulting Wick

I visit on average some 120 gardens per year ! The long summer vac allows me this invaluable visiting indulgence, though it takes meticulous planning !
Horticulture and in particular, garden making, is thriving around the country and anyone that disagrees should simply get out more and visit a few gardens !
One that in particular left a strong impression was Ulting Wick.
Most famous it seems for the exuberant tulip displays in spring, and which I have yet to see! However, in late summer, the garden does reveal a masterful plantsmanship that must rank it amongst one of the finest contemporary gardens currently being created in the country.
The garden is primarily focussed around three black barns, although as you approach the main house you know you are in for a plant treat !

Created by the ever-generous Philippa Burroughs the garden unfolds into dramatic late summer beds with zingy, tender, exotic plant combinations. herbaceous borders, then further 'softens' to a more natural planting scheme taking us through to the pond, mature weeping willows, and Woodland. The garden further delights with a beautifully controlled kitchen garden,  and delights with the must-have drought tolerant perennial and mini annual wild flower meadows.

The garden opens regularly under the NGS Scheme and I would highly recommend a visit at any time of the year that it is open. For Philippa is not only a master plantsman but a mighty fine cook..and the cakes are amazing !
